Welcome to year 1!

This year your teachers will be Mrs Smith, Mr Richards and Miss Newman-Morley.
The teaching assistants that are working with year 2 this year are Mrs Smith, Mrs Shaikh, Miss Colovic and Mrs Dam. We are really looking forward to having a great year together and we have planned lots of exciting learning!

In English we will be reading a range of picture books and will begin looking at traditional tales in the autumn term. After this we will read ‘Tusk Tusk,’ a beautifully illustrated picture book written by David McKee. Through these texts we will be learning how to retell stories, thinking carefully about the sequence of events.

Alongside this, the children will have the opportunity to develop their phonics skills through our daily phonic lessons. Reading is a high priority for the school and to ensure that the children have the best chances at success it is important that they read every night for 10minutes. Children all have a school reading book and reading record where you can record this. The more practice the children have at reading out loud the better! Please make sure the children come to school prepared, with their reading record completed each day.

In maths we are following White Rose and will be starting the year learning how to count to and recognise numbers to 10, followed by up to 20. We will be focusing on accurately counting an amount of objects and linking this to written numerals. We will continue to work with numbers within 20 by adding and subtracting using concrete resources. We will then learn all about 2D and 3D shapes, by recognising, sorting and creating patterns.

In project based learning this half term, our project is around geography. The driving question for the project is “How can we use our geography skills to improve the quad”. We will be exploring the school grounds through geographical fieldwork and observations. The children will work to develop their map skills by following and creating their own maps. For their final outcome they will then work in teams to create a solution and pitch their ideas to the Senior Leadership Team in a bid to improve their outdoor learning area.

This term, the children will have PE on a Thursday afternoon with Mr Duffy and will be doing gymnastics  with their class teacher. Mr Richards’ class will have their additional PE lesson on Monday afternoons. Mrs Smith’s class will have their additional PE lesson on Tuesday afternoons. Miss Newman-Morley’s class will have their additional PE lesson on Wednesday afternoons. Please ensure their PE kit is in school all week for this (no logos please) as timetables may change every now and then due to weather etc. Children should have indoor and outdoor PE kits available as if weather permits we will go outside.
